From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

What's it about?

[edit]
Te Mahutonga Cloak

This edit-a-thon will focus on improving the presence of Māori women weavers in both Wikipedia and Wikidata. It is intended that articles and items relating to Māori weaving will also be improved along with those relating to Māori weaving organisations. The organiser of this event is Ambrosia10 (talk).

When and where

[edit]

This event will be informal with no presentations on learning how to edit Wikipedia but instead will be focused on improving Wiki content. However, if folk want to learn or need assistance on how to edit either Wikipedia or Wikidata help will of course be given.

There will be three locations for this meetup on the 7th of January 2021. The first will be held at He Matapihi Molesworth Library at the National Library, corner Molesworth and Aitken Streets, Wellington. The date this meetup will commence when the library opens at 9am. The second location will be at the Elma Turner Library in Nelson from 9.30am. The third will be at the Hocken Library in Dunedin from 10am.

Please come along if you can to either of these locations if you want to help. Alternatively you can also assist by editing remotely.

Make sure that every Wikipedia article you work on is in New Zealand English, and uses D/M/Y dates. Here's the code:

  • {{Use dmy dates|date=January 2021}}
  • {{en-NZ|date=January 2021}}

Resources

[edit]
  • Many of the online resources are listed next to the women's names.
  • Newsletter of the national association of Maori weavers Te Roopu Raranga Whatu o Aoteaoroa (This may have to be accessed via the reading room of the National Library).
  • Books - many books aren't available for view on Google books so hard copies will have to be sought.

Outcomes

[edit]
Screen shot of some of the participants in the Māori Women Weavers Editathon

The focus of this editathon is the improvement of current articles on Māori women weavers in English Wikipedia with the aim that these be available for reuse and also translation into other languages (including hopefully into Te Reo). In the run up to the editathon editors have created several new stub and start articles to facilitate the ease of adding and linking information from books, pamphlets etc that are only available at the libraries participants will be attending. In recognition of the important role improvement of articles plays, the outcomes from this editathon will list these contributions first. Feel free to list the article you have improved and also to add your username beside that article even if it is already listed in the "new articles" section.
